Big Little Lies: Season 1 Review

“We all have something to hide”

*The series tackles several heavy topics such as rape and domestic violence*

It’s because a woman’s entire self-worth rests on her looks. That’s why. It’s because we live in a beauty-obsessed society where the most important thing a woman can do is make herself attractive to men.”

All of the media outlets have been buzzing about this series since it was released back in 2017. And I kept telling myself that one day I am going to sit down and watch it, and finally, I did but I never expected this… let’s just say that I started the first episode at noon, and by nightfall, I have finished the whole thing.

Big Little Lies is an original HBO mini-series which is based on the highly acclaimed novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. Its produced by and stars both Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, alongside a group of outstanding actors and actresses, such as Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgård and many others.

The story takes place in Monterey, California, and follows the lives of a group of five mothers, and their troubled and complicated lives.

The premiere starts with a murder at a fundraiser trivia night; we don’t know who was killed, who’s the murderer, or the circumstances leading to it. And that alone got me hooked, because if anyone knows me, knows that I love a good mystery. Then we go through the flashbacks, police integrations, and through each episode, we get glimpses and clues for the events that led the main characters to that destructive night of the murder.

There’s something wounded about her if you ask me.”

Yeah, it’s true that the series started with a murder case, but with each episode, it evolved and became so much more than that. It shed light on abuse and rape, the struggles of becoming a mother, and how far would you go to protect yourself and your family. The series did an outstanding job when it came to the topic of abuse, physical, emotional, and verbal! And how it has destructive effects not only on the parties involved but on everyone around them too.

The characters were on point, I mean we watch dozens of movies about abuse, and troubled family lives, but it’s how these amazing women portrayed their characters. They are the ones who made this story and this series unique.

Big Little Lies provided the audience with everything; humor, romance; mystery, violence, and breathtaking performances by the cast, but the one who truly stole the show were Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård.

The series was nominated for 16 Emmy Awards and won 8 of them, including best acting for Limited Series by both Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård.

I loved every single thing about this series; the settings, the storylines, the development of the characters, and my god, the soundtrack alone makes you want to watch the series. The great news is that Big Little Lies was renewed for a second season, with “wait for it” MERYL STREEP starring as a new character which is Alexander Skarsgård aka Perry’s mother.

I highly recommend this series, trust me you WILL NOT regret it!
